The Best of Me Liner Notes

(1) Play Me - Recorded at Triad Recording Studio in 1997. Becky Chace: Vocals. Paul Izzo: Piano. Engineer: Tony Ricci. This song originally was intended to be sung a capella, but we added a piano part in studio as a test and wound up liking it. I remember recording a run through to see how it sounded. We went back to listen to it and decided to keep it. What you hear on the CD is Take One.

(2) Start Right Now – Recorded at Danger Studio in Providence, RI in 2003. Drums: Tom Petteruti. Bass: Lisa Annunziata. Guitars: Brian Minisce. Vocals: Becky Chace. Engineer: Joe Moody. Joe Moody had a Tao Te Ching book of poetry sitting on his console and we decided I should go in the vocal booth and just speak a couple passages without hearing the music. It worked.

(3) Black Cat – Recorded at Triad Recording Studio in 1998. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Alan Greco: Drums. Laurence Blakely: Upright Bass. Paul Izzo: Piano. The Popgun Horn Section: Horns. Engineer: Tony Ricci. This song is probably the most played song in my catalogue. The idea for it came after I went to a Cajun Festival and asked a guy playing guitar for a typical Cajun riff. I didn’t know how to play very well so I morphed it quite a bit and came up with this rhythm. I was in a band at the time with Alan and his drum part really gave it the flavor that brought in the rest of the ideas.

(4) Gold – Recorded at Ivy Lane Studios in Woonsocket, RI in 1999. Vocal and Guitar: Becky Chace. Engineer: Larry Minnis. I played it live in the studio. It was a real confidence boost for me to know that the band picked it and wanted me to play it solo.

(5) Rescue – Recorded at Danger Studio in 2004. Becky Chace: Vocal. Brian Minisce: Electric and Acoustic Guitars. Lisa Annunziatat: Bass. Tom Petteruti: Drums. Engineer: Joe Moody. I wrote this song after the Station Fire for a friend and her family. I remember it all falling into place as we were recording like magic, especially Brian’s guitar tracks. He layered everything perfectly, some by accident, some intentionally. Joe’s engineering style was as much an instrument on this song as the guitars themselves.

(6) Surrender – Recorded at Ivy Lane Studios in 2002. Larry Minnis: Engineer. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Brian Minisce: Acoustic Guitar. Lisa Annunziata: Bass. This was on our Used Cars CD, which was recorded live in the studio in one day. Lisa and I wrote it together jamming on her bass lick that opens the song.

(7) Don’t Say Hi – Recorded at Danger Studio in 2004. Becky Chace: Vocals. Brian Minisce: Electric and Acoustic Guitars. Joe Moody: Additional Guitars. Lisa Annunziatat: Bass. Tom Petteruti: Drums. Engineer: Joe Moody. This song is a fan favorite and I always thought if we had an actual hit, this might be the one. If you’ve followed our music long enough you know this is a Lisa song. You can tell by the bridge. We walked in one day to find Joe Moody playing the lead line in the bridge, which some people have said makes the song.

(8) Uninspired - Recorded at Ivy Lane Studios in 2002. Larry Minnis: Engineer. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Brian Minisce: Acoustic Guitar. Another live in studio performance. The beginning of Brian’s Spanish flare.

(9) Used Cars - Recorded at Danger Studio in 2004. Becky Chace: Vocals. Brian Minisce: Electric and Acoustic Guitars. Joe Moody: Additional Guitars. Lisa Annunziatat: Bass. Tom Petteruti: Drums. Engineer: Joe Moody. The second version of this song to make it to one of our records, it was because we had begun playing it live with Dave Latimer. His drum part was so cool we decided to give it an update on Rescue. Unfortunately Dave had moved to Philly by the time we went in the studio. Tom did a nice job playing a part similar to what Dave had played.

(10) Woman Blues - Recorded at Ivy Lane Studios in 1999. Larry Minnis: Engineer. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Brian Minisce: Elecrtic Guitar. Lisa Annunziata: Bass. Carrie Johnson: Drums. I didn’t quite have my blues style formed at this point but I like the inexperienced feel of it and the fact that we are playing blues without knowing much about it at the time.

(11) The Shuffle - Recorded at Triad Recording Studio in 1997. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Paul Izzo: Bass. Alan Greco: Djembe. Tony Ricci: Engineer. It was Paul’s idea to say, “This is the shuffles,” as that’s how I had introduced it on the original demo I did for him in his basement. It’s funny how when I look back at the lyrics to this song I wrote in college, I am reminded that I still write about the exact same themes.

(12) Drive - Recorded at Ivy Lane Studios in 2002. Larry Minnis: Engineer. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Brian Minisce: Elecrtic Guitar. Lisa Annunziata: Bass. Dave Latimer: Drums. I called Brian with the melody and lyrics for this song one day while wondering around the tuxedo warehouse I worked in and he said wow, that sounds just like something I was just fooling around with so we made that the intro.

(13) Long Way Down – Becky Chace: Vocals. Brian Minisce: Elecrtic Guitar. Lisa Annunziata: Bass. Dave Latimer: Drums. I love Dave’s drums on this one. We went in to do 3 songs live. This was crowd pleaser.

(14) End of Time - Recorded at Danger Studio in 2004. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitars. Brian Minisce: Electric Guitar. Lisa Annunziatat: Bass. Tom Petteruti: Drums. Engineer: Joe Moody. I put this in for my mother. It’s her favorite. I always wished we had had a trumpet solo on the part I sing the oohs.

(15) The Wrong Door - Recorded at Triad Recording Studio in 1998. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar.

(16) Take Me Home - Recorded at Ivy Lane Studios in 2002. Larry Minnis: Engineer. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Brian Minisce: Elecrtic Guitar. Lisa Annunziata: Bass. Dave Latimer: Drums. We decided to change the last chord to Am instead of resolving on the C. It was Larry’s idea and I remember he said it would make it seem like it was all a lie. I loved that.

(17) Best of Me – Recorded at Paul Izzo’s home in Sharon, MA in 1997. This is the demo of that song, I had just written it. The guitar is out of tune and I’m not sure of the lyrics. A classic.

(18) No Soul – Recorded, Produced and Engineered by Matt Melone 2004. The way these songs worked was you go in, Matt puts up a beat, you start playing and singing, next thing you know you have the outline of a song, you come back 2 weeks later and it’s really turning into something, you play a few more guitar riffs and some more vocals. You come back in a month and there it is. Done. Matt is fine producer, engineer, and set a mood that always got us great performances and ideas right on the spot.

(19) Lyin Awake – Recorded, Produced and Engineered by Matt Melone 2004.

(20) Easy – Recorded at Danger Studio in 2006. Becky Chace: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar. Paul Izzo: Bass. Don Culp: Drums. Engineer: Joe Moody
